Green Grotto Caves
Nature
Cut into the limestone bedrock of Jamaica's north coast near Discovery Bay, Green Grotto Caves is a network of underground chambers, stalactites, and stalagmites extending roughly 1,525 metres in length. The caves take their name from the green algae that clings to sections of the walls near the entrance where sunlight penetrates. A subterranean lake - Grotto Lake - sits deep within the cave system, its still, clear water reflecting the cave ceiling. Guided tours of about 45 minutes take visitors along lit walkways through the main chambers while explaining the caves' layered history: Taino people sheltered here centuries before Spanish colonizers, runaway slaves used them as hiding places, and Jamaican smugglers once stored rum in the chambers. During World War II, the British reportedly used the caves to store weapons. Bats inhabit the deeper sections, visible hanging from the ceilings. The grounds include a nature walk, gift shop, and snack bar. Tours depart regularly throughout the day. Green Grotto sits just off the A1 highway between Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay. Aurum Transfers delivers you from MBJ Airport in about 1 hour 30 minutes for $210 for up to four guests.
