Devon House
Historic Site
Built in 1881 by George Stiebel - Jamaica's first Black millionaire, who made his fortune in Venezuelan gold mining - Devon House is one of Kingston's finest heritage properties. The Georgian-style mansion sits on 11 acres of manicured lawns and gardens in the heart of New Kingston, and guided tours of the house showcase period furniture, crystal chandeliers, and the story of Stiebel's remarkable rise. But most visitors come for what surrounds the house: the Devon House I Scream shop, serving what many consider the best ice cream in the Caribbean - try the Devon Stout or Grapenut flavours. The courtyard complex also houses The Brick Oven bakery (known for Jamaican patties), Grogg Shoppe for cocktails, and several boutiques selling Jamaican fashion and crafts. Devon House functions as Kingston's central meeting place for locals and visitors alike - weekend afternoons see families, couples, and friend groups spread across the lawns. Entrance to the grounds is free; house tours carry a separate fee. Aurum Transfers delivers you from Norman Manley Airport (KIN) in about 45 minutes for $110 for up to four guests.
