Blue Lagoon
Nature
Fed by underground mineral springs that mix with warm Caribbean seawater, the Blue Lagoon near Port Antonio is a deep, volcanic-blue body of water surrounded by limestone cliffs and dense tropical vegetation. The lagoon is estimated at over 180 feet deep in sections - far deeper than its modest surface area suggests - and the mixing of cold freshwater with warm saltwater creates temperature layers that shift as you swim. The colour changes throughout the day with the angle of sunlight, ranging from deep sapphire in the morning to electric turquoise by afternoon. The lagoon featured in the 1980 film of the same name (though much of that film was actually shot in Fiji). Today, local boat operators offer short trips from the lagoon through a narrow channel to the open sea and back. Bamboo rafting on the adjacent Rio Grande can be combined with a lagoon visit. A small bar and restaurant sit near the water's edge. The Blue Lagoon sits about 10 minutes east of Port Antonio along the coast road. Aurum Transfers delivers you from MBJ Airport in about 4 hours for $755 for up to four guests, with Starlink WiFi keeping you connected through the mountain stretches.
