Black River Safari
Wildlife
The Black River is Jamaica's longest navigable river, flowing through the Great Morass wetland - the island's largest freshwater wetland system - before reaching the sea at Black River town in St. Elizabeth. Safari boat tours travel about 7 miles upstream through mangrove channels, where American crocodiles bask on the banks in such numbers that guides know individual animals by name. Boat captains stop at regular sighting points and describe the wetland ecology: you will see herons, egrets, kingfishers, and jacanas in the mangroves, plus blooming water hyacinth and royal palms rising from the morass. The upper reaches of the tour pass through quieter, less-visited sections where the river narrows and the canopy closes overhead. Tours depart from the Black River waterfront several times daily and run approximately 90 minutes. The river's dark colour comes from decomposing organic matter in the peat-rich morass, not pollution. Black River town is also a practical base for visiting YS Falls and Appleton Estate, both within 30 minutes. Aurum Transfers delivers you from MBJ Airport in about 3 hours 30 minutes for $465 for up to four guests, with Starlink WiFi throughout.
