Trench Town Culture Yard
Cultural
Trench Town is the Kingston neighbourhood where reggae music was born - the home turf of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer during their formative years as The Wailers in the 1960s. The Culture Yard at 6 and 8 Lower First Street preserves the government yard (a shared tenement compound) where Marley lived as a young man. The small museum displays photographs, early recording equipment, a replica of Marley's bedroom, and the very VW bus that appeared on the cover of a Wailers album. Local guides - many of whom grew up in Trench Town - lead tours through the yard and surrounding streets, sharing stories about the community's role in developing ska, rocksteady, and reggae. Acoustic jam sessions sometimes break out during visits. The Culture Yard is a community-run initiative, and tour fees support neighbourhood programmes. Be aware that Trench Town is an inner-city neighbourhood - visits are safe with a guide but independent wandering is not recommended. The area sits in downtown Kingston near National Heroes Park. Aurum Transfers delivers you from Norman Manley Airport (KIN) in about 1 hour for $135 for up to four guests.
