The Cage
Historic Site
The Cage is a small Georgian-era stone structure on Sam Sharpe Square in downtown Montego Bay, St. James Parish, Jamaica. Built in 1806, it originally served as a lockup for runaway enslaved people and later as a jail for vagrants and disorderly sailors. The thick-walled building with its barred windows stands as a stark reminder of Montego Bay's role in the plantation economy and the resistance movements that followed, including the 1831 Christmas Rebellion led by National Hero Samuel Sharpe. The Cage now functions as an informal heritage marker within the bustling town square. Aurum Transfers provides private airport transfers from Sangster International Airport (MBJ) starting at $75 for up to four guests, with complimentary Starlink WiFi and cold beverages. The 20 minute drive from MBJ follows Queens Drive into central Montego Bay.
