Doctor's Cave Beach

Beach

Doctor's Cave Beach has been drawing visitors to Montego Bay since 1906, when Dr. Alexander James McCatty donated his beachfront property to establish a bathing club - originally accessed through a seaside cave destroyed by a hurricane in 1932. In the 1920s, British osteopath Sir Herbert Barker published claims that the waters had curative powers, and wealthy travelers poured in, effectively launching Montego Bay's tourism industry. Today, the crescent of white sand fronts clear turquoise water with temperatures hovering between 78-84 degreesF year-round. The $6 USD admission fee keeps the beach well-maintained and relatively hassle-free. Snorkeling gear is available for rent, and the reef just offshore - part of the protected Montego Bay Marine Park - supports butterflyfish, blue tangs, and stingrays. Facilities include a restaurant, grill bar, changing rooms, and water sports rentals. The beach sits on Gloucester Avenue within walking distance of shops, bars, and Margaritaville. Aurum Transfers gets you from Sangster International Airport to the Hip Strip in about 15 minutes for $75 for up to four guests, with your driver waiting inside the terminal at arrivals.
