Rio Nuevo Battle Site
Historic Site
Rio Nuevo Battle Site is a national heritage monument in St. Mary Parish, Jamaica, marking the location of the 1658 battle where English forces defeated the Spanish garrison, securing British colonial control of Jamaica. The site overlooks the Rio Nuevo river mouth on the north coast between Ocho Rios and Oracabessa. Interpretive markers and a memorial plaque describe the battle that ended 150 years of Spanish rule. The hilltop position offers views of the Caribbean Sea and the surrounding St. Mary coastline. Rio Nuevo is one of Jamaica's most important colonial-era military sites, though it remains a quiet and contemplative location. Aurum Transfers provides private airport transfers from Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ) starting at $95 for up to four guests, with complimentary Starlink WiFi. The 40 minute drive from OCJ follows the coast west through Oracabessa.
