Greenwood Great House
Historic Site
Perched on a hillside between Montego Bay and Falmouth, Greenwood Great House offers something Rose Hall's more famous mansion does not - authenticity. Built between 1780 and 1800 by Richard Barrett, a cousin of poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the house has never been destroyed and retains its original library of rare books, antique furniture, Wedgwood china, and a collection of musical instruments including a barrel organ. The Barrett family owned several sugar estates along the north coast and were among Jamaica's most powerful planter families. Unlike the theatrical ghost-tour approach at Rose Hall, Greenwood delivers a quieter, more intimate walk through genuine colonial-era artifacts. The verandah provides sweeping views over the cane fields to the Caribbean Sea. A small bar on the grounds serves drinks, and the surrounding gardens make for pleasant wandering. Tours run approximately 45 minutes. Greenwood sits about 20 minutes east of Sangster Airport along the coastal highway. Aurum Transfers brings you here from MBJ for $85 for up to four guests - your driver meets you inside the terminal, and Starlink WiFi keeps you connected through the scenic drive.
