Bamboo Avenue

Nature

Stretching for 2.5 kilometres along the road between Middle Quarters and Lacovia in St. Elizabeth, Bamboo Avenue is one of Jamaica's most photographed roadways - a towering tunnel of giant bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris) whose arching canes meet overhead to form a continuous green canopy. Originally planted in the 17th century along what was a major transport route connecting the south coast sugar estates to the interior, the bamboo has regrown through hurricanes and road widening to maintain its cathedral-like effect. Driving or walking through the avenue, filtered green light creates an almost otherworldly atmosphere. Roadside vendors sell fresh crayfish (called 'pepper shrimp') caught from the Black River at the Middle Quarters end - they are seasoned with scotch bonnet pepper and sold in small bags for a few hundred Jamaican dollars. This is one of Jamaica's most iconic roadside food traditions. Bamboo Avenue sits along the A2 highway between Black River and Mandeville, making it a natural stop on any south coast itinerary. Aurum Transfers delivers you from MBJ Airport in about 3 hours 15 minutes for $445 for up to four guests, with Starlink WiFi.
