Your plane touches down at Sangster International Airport. The seatbelt sign goes off. You have just arrived in Jamaica.
What happens next determines the tone for your entire trip. This guide walks through every stage of your first hour at MBJ -- from wheels down to wheels rolling toward your resort -- so nothing catches you off guard.
What Happens When You Land at Sangster International Airport?
MBJ handles international flights from across North America, the UK, and Europe. Depending on your arrival time, you may land during one of the daily peak windows -- late morning or mid-afternoon -- when multiple flights arrive within a short window. This can mean a busy terminal, but the process is straightforward.
Once you deplane, you will walk through an air-conditioned corridor toward immigration. The terminal is modern, clean, and well-signposted. Follow the signs for "Arriving Passengers."
Immigration
Jamaica's immigration process is efficient. You will need:
A valid passport (with at least six months validity for most nationalities)
A completed immigration form -- many airlines distribute these on the flight, or you can complete one at the kiosk in the arrivals hall
Return flight information -- your departure date and flight number
Accommodation details -- your resort or hotel name and address
The immigration officer will stamp your passport and welcome you to Jamaica. During peak times, the queue can take 15-30 minutes. Off-peak, it is often under 10 minutes.
Tip: Jamaica now offers an online pre-registration system through the PICA (Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency) website. Completing this before your flight can speed up immigration processing.
Baggage Claim
After clearing immigration, you proceed to the baggage hall. Electronic boards show which carousel is assigned to your flight. MBJ has multiple carousels, and luggage typically begins appearing 15-20 minutes after landing.
Free luggage trolleys are available throughout the baggage area. Grab one before heading to your carousel -- it makes navigating the customs area much easier.
Customs
Jamaica's customs process is declaration-based. If you have nothing to declare -- no excessive quantities of alcohol, tobacco, or goods exceeding the duty-free allowance -- you walk through the green channel. This is the case for the vast majority of visitors.
The customs area leads directly to the arrivals hall.
The Arrivals Hall: Where Aurum Meets You
This is where the MBJ experience splits in two. Visitors without pre-arranged transport walk outside into a busy pickup area, where taxi drivers, tour operators, and transport hawkers compete for attention. It is loud, hot, and disorienting -- especially after an international flight.
Guests with an Aurum Transfers booking have a different experience. Your driver is waiting inside the arrivals terminal with a board showing your name. Not outside in the parking lot. Not at a meeting point across the road. Inside, in the air-conditioned arrivals hall, exactly where you exit customs.
You were sent your driver's name, photo, and vehicle details via WhatsApp before you left home. You already know who you are looking for.
Walk through the doors. See your name. Your transfer has begun.
The Walk to Your Vehicle
Your Aurum driver greets you, confirms your name and destination, and assists with your luggage. From the arrivals hall, the walk to the vehicle is short -- our drivers park in the closest available area to minimize the time between meeting you and getting on the road.
You will notice the temperature change when you step outside. MBJ sits on Jamaica's northwest coast, and the air is warm and humid year-round. The walk to your vehicle is brief, and the air conditioning will be running when you get in.
Inside the Vehicle
Once you are seated:
Air conditioning is already at full cool
Cold water is waiting for you
Starlink satellite WiFi connects automatically -- ask your driver for the network name and password
Your driver confirms your destination, estimated drive time, and preferred route
Take a moment. Connect to WiFi. Message your family that you have landed. Check into your resort app if they have one. Or just sit back and watch the scenery.
The Drive: What to Expect by Destination
Your drive time depends on where you are headed:
For the shorter transfers -- Hip Strip, Ironshore, Rose Hall, Freeport -- you will be at your resort before you finish your water. For longer drives, the Starlink WiFi keeps you connected, and the scenery along Jamaica's coast makes the journey part of the experience.
If Your Flight Was Delayed
It happens. Connecting flights are missed, weather delays stack up, and your 2:00 PM arrival becomes 3:45 PM.
With Aurum Transfers, this is not a problem. Our system tracks your flight in real time from the moment it enters range. Your driver adjusts automatically. No phone calls, no extra fees, no rebooking. When you walk through customs -- whenever that is -- your driver is there, name board ready, as if nothing changed.
This is one of the most underrated features of a pre-booked transfer with flight tracking. You eliminate an entire category of arrival stress.
Your First Hour, Summarised
From touchdown to driving away, the entire process typically takes 30 to 55 minutes. With your transfer pre-booked and your driver already inside, the only variable is the immigration queue.
