Nanny Falls
Waterfall
Named for Queen Nanny - the legendary Maroon warrior-leader who defended her people against British colonial forces in the 18th century - Nanny Falls cascades through the Blue Mountains near the Maroon settlement of Moore Town in upper Portland. The hike to the falls follows the Nanny River through dense mountain rainforest, crossing the river multiple times before reaching a series of cascades that drop into deep, cold swimming pools. The trail is not maintained to tourist-attraction standards - expect muddy paths, river crossings, and genuine jungle terrain. A local Maroon guide from Moore Town is essential, both for navigation and for understanding the cultural significance of the area. Moore Town itself is a UNESCO-designated site, and the Maroon community maintains its own governance structure and cultural traditions separate from the Jamaican government under a 1739 treaty with the British. The hike (approximately 2-3 hours round trip) rewards with genuine wilderness and a cultural story found nowhere else on the island. Aurum Transfers delivers you from OCJ Airport in about 2 hours 30 minutes for $445 for up to four guests, with Starlink WiFi.
